Is Concierge Medicine Right for You?

5 min read

A concierge membership is a real recurring expense, and it is not the right decision for everyone. Here is a straight assessment of who tends to benefit — and what to ask before joining any practice.

Signs it may be a good fit

  • You have delayed or skipped care because getting an appointment was too difficult
  • You manage one or more chronic conditions and coordinating care has become a part-time job
  • Your time carries real cost, and half a day lost to a waiting room is expensive
  • You want a prevention-focused relationship rather than episodic sick visits
  • You have cycled through providers and want one physician who knows your history
  • You travel often and want to reach your own doctor from anywhere

Signs it may not be

  • You are generally healthy, see a physician about once a year, and are satisfied with that
  • Your current primary care relationship is already responsive and you are happy with it
  • The fee would strain your budget — particularly if it tempted you to drop insurance
  • What you actually need is specialist care, which concierge primary care does not replace

Questions to ask any concierge practice

The answers vary more than people expect. Ask directly:

  • How many patients does each physician take on?
  • What exactly is included in membership, and what gets billed separately?
  • How do I reach my physician after hours, and who answers?
  • How quickly can I expect to be seen for an urgent problem?
  • Do you bill my insurance for anything at all?
  • What happens if I need a specialist or a hospitalization?
  • Can I cancel, and what is the policy if I do?
  • Who covers for my physician during vacations or absences?

A word about insurance

Do not drop your health insurance in order to afford a concierge membership. This is the single most costly mistake someone can make with this model.

A membership covers primary care. It does not cover a hospitalization, a surgery, or a serious diagnosis — precisely the expenses insurance exists to absorb. The two are complements.

How to think about the decision

Weigh the membership against what the access is worth to you, not against your current copay. The honest comparison is not membership versus free.

It is the membership measured against the hours you spend coordinating your own care, the urgent-care visits you might avoid, and the value of catching something early because a physician had time to look properly.

If you are unsure, talk to the practice. A good one will tell you candidly if you are not a fit.

The bottom line

The model earns its cost when access is your bottleneck. If it is not, that is a perfectly good reason to pass — and a practice worth joining will tell you so.
